چکیده

0. Introduction The status of functional categories in early child language has been a subject of debate for much of the last decade (Hyams 1986, Radford 1990, Platzack 1992, Rizzi 1993, Wexler 1994). In general, proponents of the ‘No Functional Categories’ position claim that production data from early child language clearly demonstrates that the differences between child language and adult language can be accounted for by the lack of functional projections in the former. Proponents in favour of the existence of functional categories in early child language, on the other hand, claim that the differences between child language and adult language is to be found elsewhere in the grammar, and that the status of functional categories is essentially identical for both children and adults, assuming UG and the Continuity Hypothesis. In this paper, I argue in favour of adopting the strong syntactic continuity hypothesis (Hyams 1996) in which the child’s grammar contains the same projections as the adult grammar. By adopting this assumption, I provide a Minimalist account of the child language data. I claim that the evidence from early child language supports a Minimalist position whereby children possess all the functional categories which comprise adult grammar. This position allows us to maintain a strong version of the continuity hypothesis while providing an account of the child data.

NP Ellipsis and Parameters: An Acquisitional Perspective

Within the Principles-and-Parameters approach to UG (including the recent Minimalist Program), the process of language acquisition is interpreted as the process of fixing the values of parameters in one of the permissible ways (see e.g. Chomsky 1995:6). Under this view, the data from child language can (in principle) be especially valuable, in evaluating the parameters proposed through the inve...

Two Kinds of Variation in a Minimalist System

This paper reconsiders the status of parameters and parametric variation from the perspective of recent developments within the minimalist program, in particular the problem that arises if parameters can no longer be part of UG, which must be maximally empty, and if variation is instead to be explained in terms of third-factor considerations (section 1). I pursue the idea that variation arises ...

Early Phonological and Lexical Development of a Farsi Speaking Child: A Longitudinal Case Study

The present study aims at the description and analysis of the phonological and lexical development of a child who is acquiring Farsi as his first language. The child's language production at the holophrastic stage of language development, mainly single words, is observed and recorded  longitudinally for nearly seven  months since he was 16 months old until he turned 23 months. An attempt is mad...

Universal Grammar and Chaos/Complexity Theory: Where Do They Meet And Where Do They Cross?

Abstract The present study begins by sketching "Chaos/Complexity Theory" (C/CT) and its applica-tion to the nature of language and language acquisition. Then, the theory of "Universal Grammar" (UG) is explicated with an eye to C/CT. Firstly, it is revealed that CCT may or may not be allied with a theory of language acquisition that takes UG as the initial state of language acquisition for ...
